RECALL PROCESS UPDATES
Has there been an update to the recall announced on 5/20?
No. The FDA has issued a report sharing details of its investigation in partnership with our teams. We are confident in the food safety processes we have in place that have helped us to quickly take action as well as the enhanced measures we have put in place, including additional testing and sanitation.
With confidence in our food safety processes and the additional measures we have put in place, we are working as efficiently as possible to return our products to store shelves. We have resumed accepting orders from our retail customers for peanut butter and products should be back on shelves a few weeks after orders are placed. We suggest referring to your preferred retailer for the best availability information locally.
What was the cause of the recall/how have you addressed any issues?
As part of our standard control process, we identified that an equipment issue may have allowed water to enter and remain in our production environment. These conditions could have provided a potential source for bacteria to be introduced into our system. In response, we have:
- Repaired the equipment
- Conducted extensive cleaning and sanitation throughout our facility;
- Destroyed product;
- Refined our cleaning process;
- Strengthened our already rigorous finished product testing standards; and
- Collected and tested hundreds of swabs throughout our facility, all of which were negative for Salmonella
The FDA also collected environmental swabs as part of its investigation of the recall and communicated that these swabs were negative for Salmonella.
Were other peanut-related products impacted or are your other manufacturing facilities impacted?
This recall was isolated to our Lexington, KY, manufacturing facility, and does not impact our other peanut butter-producing facilities. In addition, there is no impact to Smucker’s Uncrustables, Santa Cruz Organic, Laura Scudder’s, Adam’s, Smucker’s Natural, Smucker’s Goober or any other J.M. Smucker Co. brand. While our other peanut butter-producing facilities and brands were not impacted, we will take learnings from this event and apply them across our manufacturing facilities, as appropriate.
How long until products return to shelves?
We are working as efficiently as possible to return our products to store shelves. We have resumed accepting orders from our retail customers for peanut butter and products should be back on shelves a few weeks after orders are placed. We suggest referring to your preferred retailer for the best availability information locally.

Of course, the Jif team wants to be sure kids with peanut allergies are not exposed to peanut butter. We recommend parents always read the ingredient labels to be safe. As alternatives to peanut butter, Jif products also include nut butters, such as almond and hazelnut spreads.
The Jif brand also supports outside initiatives dedicated to peanut allergy research and awareness. For example, the brand has long partnered with The National Peanut Board, supporting peanut research and education initiatives. Part of their work focuses on peanut allergy awareness and education, including resources for parents, educators and anyone who cares for children.
Separately, the grand-prize winner of the 2018 “Imagine If, With Jif” Contest is specifically focused on food allergy awareness. Elena Gallegos from Corona, California, founded Unicorn Kids, a business that raises awareness for kids with food allergies and promotes food allergy safety through one-of-a-kind T-shirt designs. Elena received a $15,000 grant to help her continue supporting and inspiring kids with food allergies and helping them navigate life.
Families with nut allergen concerns can find out more about health and nutrition research, allergy resources and more at the National Peanut Board’s website: www.peanutallergyfacts.org
The Peanut Institute is a non-profit organization that supports nutrition research and develops educational programs to encourage healthful lifestyles. The J. M. Unopened and stored in a cool, dry area, Jif peanut butter will last about two years (refer to the “Best If Used By” date). After opening, you can keep Jif peanut butter about three months on the pantry shelf. If unopened, Jif To Go Peanut Butter and Jif Natural Peanut Butter Spread will each last one year (refer to the “Best If Used By” date).
We place a “Best If Used By” date on every jar. On most jars, the “Best If Used By” date is printed in white ink on the back of the jar under the universal product barcode (UPC). In some instances, the date will be printed in black ink directly on the plastic jar above the label.
Jif® peanut butter does not require refrigeration.
Jif® Natural Peanut Butter Spread contains palm oil, which is derived from the fruit of a palm tree. Palm oil is an alternative stabilizer. We recognize and share the concerns related to palm oil sourcing and the environment. We remain committed to working only with suppliers who are responsible and who share the same commitments to quality and ethics as we do. Please see above for an overview of our sourcing policies, or see our Corporate Responsibility Report for more.
Jif® Natural Peanut Butter Spread is made from five ingredients and stabilized with palm oil to prevent oil separation. However, since it is made from all natural ingredients, minimal oil separation may be possible.
Jif® peanut butter with omega-3 DHA & EPA uses an encapsulated fish oil source that contains both EPA and DHA. The encapsulation process keeps the DHA/EPA locked in, while keeping the smell and taste of fish out of the peanut butter. However, we encourage individuals to consult their medical professional if they have specific allergy concerns.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Food and Drug Administration, there is no current evidence that the virus is transmitted through processed food. Given this, there is no threat of contracting coronavirus through the consumption of any Jif products.
